This year's Mediolanum International Funds Convention opened with a simple idea that ran through the whole afternoon: change isn't coming. It's already here. Two outside speakers, a run of honest conversations with our own colleagues, and a closing address from our CEO all built towards the same theme — Rewrite the Rules.
The world has shaken
“Today isn't about pretending the world is simple,” our Master of Ceremony told the room. “There is no back. There is only next, and next belongs to whoever understands the forces first.” That idea carried through performance psychologist Jamil Qureshi, who has coached six athletes to world number one and studied astronauts on the NASA Space Program: “you don't wait to feel ready. You move, and ready catches up.” Former Army Ranger Ray Goggins, familiar to many from RTÉ's Ultimate Hell Week, put it just as plainly: we don't build confidence by waiting for certainty, we build it by taking the next step. Real confidence isn't the absence of fear, it's the byproduct of preparation.
The toolkit: people, technology and values
After the break, the focus turned inward. As our MC put it, at a time when some organisations are responding to uncertainty by cutting people, Mediolanum has chosen the opposite direction: investing in the people, technology and values that help everyone navigate uncertainty and become the best version of themselves. Rather than hear that from the stage, the room heard it from colleagues living it. Inma spent twenty years in Research before stepping into a newly created role leading the company's ESG strategy: “Mediolanum didn't only look at what I had done. They looked at what I could do. They saw potential.” Colleagues from Equity Research shared how tools like Research Pulse now help them cut through each morning's noise — “AI will outperform the individual, but human plus AI will always outperform AI alone” — and one colleague spoke movingly about the company standing behind her through a difficult family situation, a reminder, as our MC put it, that values become your compass when the path is uncertain.
Real people, real impact
Two Family Bankers, visiting from Italy and Spain, brought it back to why any of this matters. “For years, my job was simple,” one said. “I'd sit with clients, and with one click I'd send their savings to Dublin. Then I came to Dublin. I met the teams. Suddenly, those clicks had faces. And that changed everything.” As our MC reminded the room, what happens in Dublin has a direct impact on a Family Banker and their clients: real people, miles away.
Let's rewrite the rules, together
An integral part of the afternoon was the Tenure Awards, marking colleagues reaching five and ten years with the business — the people, as our MC said, who show up every day and occasionally save the day before anyone realises there was a problem. CEO Furio Pietribiasi closed the day with his own story of starting over, in a new role and later a new country, with no clear roadmap, echoing the inspirational words of Banca Mediolanum founder Ennio Doris as another successful Convention came to an end: "True success is measured not only in economic terms but in the ability to improve the lives of the people around us."
